A.G. Rhodes is proud to celebrate 120 years of delivering compassionate care to seniors throughout metro Atlanta.

A Remarkable Legacy

One man’s generosity created a remarkable legacy that now spans 120 years.

A.G. Rhodes was one of the first nursing organizations to be licensed in Georgia and is currently one of a few nonprofit nursing organizations in the state.

As one of Atlanta’s oldest nonprofit organizations, our roots trace back more than a century ago when Amos Giles Rhodes came to Atlanta and founded Rhodes Furniture. He donated the land and funds for A.G. Rhodes’ first location, which opened in 1904 at the corner of Boulevard and Woodward Avenue where our flagship location still operates today.

Thanks to generous community support which has enabled our mission for 120 years, A.G. Rhodes has expanded and now operates three locations serving more than 1,100 seniors each year in Fulton, Cobb and DeKalb counties. The family of Amos Giles Rhodes has never wavered from its commitment and family members have remained deeply involved in our mission over the generations since the organization’s inception.

120 Years of Care, A.G. Rhodes

“I enjoy helping people and always want to be able to help people. I had no idea that I was winding up in this field. But once I got involved in it, I fell in love with it. I always try to go the extra mile to help somebody. And along the way, I’ve met a lot of fascinating people and have had wonderful relationships with my elders.”

Our Ongoing Commitment to Person-Directed Care

120 Years of Care, A.G. Rhodes

Over the last 120 years, A.G. Rhodes has emerged as a national thought leader for person-directed care – particularly for those who are living with dementia. We were one of the first organizations in the state to embrace a person-directed approach to senior care, which is the kind of care that we all want for our loved ones and for ourselves as we age.

Person-directed care means that we frame our delivery of care according to the unique needs and preferences of each elder. It means that in addition to prioritizing high-quality care, we equally prioritize an environment that promotes an exceptional quality of life.

As our nation’s aging population grows rapidly—particularly in Atlanta, the nation’s fastest aging city—and as the prevalence of dementia rises, person-directed care is increasingly important. Our society holds negative perceptions of aging and aging-related illnesses—especially the stigma associated with dementia—but a person-directed approach encourages us to view aging and dementia through a much different and more humane lens. Through person-directed care, we recognize that regardless of age or diagnosis, we are all capable of living purposeful and active lives, and we can all make meaningful contributions.

Our Purposeful Path Forward

Recognizing that the nursing home of the past is no longer an acceptable option—especially after lessons learned from COVID-19—A.G. Rhodes has embarked on a landmark capital effort to build a new home for seniors living with dementia. As we celebrate our milestone anniversary, we will also soon celebrate the grand opening of our new skilled nursing and memory care community which redefines what it means to grow older.

We have transformed our A.G. Rhodes Cobb campus into a community that combines the principles of person-directed care with an environment and accommodations that we all desire and deserve as we age. This transformation is part of our $37.5 million Legacy of Care capital campaign.

Among other improvements, our new community affords each resident staying at A.G. Rhodes Cobb private room accommodations, something that Medicaid—which most of our residents rely on—does not cover. But thanks to generous community support, our new nursing home community is accessible to those who are uninsured, underinsured and underserved, and it serves as a model that can be replicated throughout Atlanta, Georgia and across the nation.
