About Seeds for Seniors

The Seeds for Seniors program within our Horticultural Therapy Department promotes gardening activities and contact with nature such as planting herbs to increase sensory stimulation, watering to improve motor skills, and group gardening to help decrease isolation and depression.

In addition to its many physical benefits, gardening activities offers a wealth of cognitive and emotional benefits, especially for older adults. It can be very relaxing, and a great form of stress release.

Gardening opens up opportunities to socialize and interact with others, which can help decrease depression, or feelings of isolation and loneliness. It can also be very rewarding to take part in an activity where, in a relatively short amount of time, you see the results.

Your Support

Even a small contribution can go a long way to support Seeds for Seniors.

  • Donate your 4” and 6” nursery containers.
Instead of throwing away your oldblue and black pots for Seeds for Seniors
nursery containers, consider donating them. We use them during Horticultural Therapy for all of our plant propagation. Save a bag full and deliver them to any of our three A.G. Rhodes Health & Rehab locations. A new case of 4″ pots costs $230, so reusing pots is a significant savings for us and results in less waste.
  • Donate to the Seeds for Seniors program. Your gift supports the Horticultural Therapy Department and helps cover the costs of materials such as seeds, soil, pots and other gardening items. In fact, a meaningful donation of $33 covers the cost of a month’s worth supply of potting soil. Click here to donate.
