The Man Behind the Scenes, A.G. RhodesEmployee Spotlight: Alfonso Weems, Environmental Services, A.G. Rhodes Wesley Woods

At A.G. Rhodes Wesley Woods, Environmental Services Director Alfonso Weems plays a crucial role in making the nursing home a welcoming place for the elders who live there. He oversees housekeeping, laundry, flooring, and maintenance, working with his team to ensure the environment feels like home.

“The bottom line is, my team and I keep the facility clean so we can keep the elders healthy and safe,” Alfonso said.

Latasha Ward, A.G. Rhodes Wesley Woods Administrator, says that while the work of environmental services may often be done behind the scenes, it’s critically important to the home’s success.

“While Alfonso and his team’s work is sometimes unseen, it has a direct impact on the quality of care and quality of life for our elders,” she said. “We couldn’t do what we do without them.”

Alfonso’s passion for supporting elders began before his time at A.G. Rhodes. Prior to joining the organization nine years ago, he worked with another nonprofit focused on making home repairs for older adults, ensuring they could remain safely in their houses. The connection between the two roles is clear: Alfonso has dedicated his career to creating an optimal environment for older adults.

“I’ve always cared for elders,” he said.

The impact of environmental services is felt every day. From the countless day-to-day tasks required to maintain the building to responding to unexpected emergencies—with moments of connection with residents, including pitching in to drive them on outings—Alfonso and his team play a vital role in the compassionate care delivered at A.G. Rhodes.

“Just yesterday, we took some of the elders to Walmart,” he shared. “I took them around the store, and the whole time they were just saying thank you. It was so nice to see them happy, just being out and about.”

For Alfonso, that sense of gratitude is the best part of his job.

“When you help an elder and they’re very appreciative, it’s the smile on their face that keeps you going,” he said.

He also knows that for the residents at A.G. Rhodes, the building is more than just a facility—it’s their home.

“This is where they live,” he said. “Just like you want your home to be up to par, we want that for them, too.”

It takes endurance, flexibility, and above all, a caring heart to do this work well. Alfonso and his team embody these qualities every day, making sure that the elders at A.G. Rhodes are surrounded by dignity, safety, and care—something we all want and deserve for ourselves and our loved ones.
