Living Well Luncheon
Thank you to all who attended and supported the 2023 Living Well Luncheon, hosted by the A.G. Rhodes Board of Advisors. More than 200 people attended the event on Feb. 23 at the Cherokee Town Club.
Engineering Solutions for the Future of Aging and Health
We welcomed Jude M. Phillip from Johns Hopkins University as our featured speaker. The topic of his conversation was “Engineering Solutions for the Future of Aging and Health.”
The aging population in the United States is increasing. Census data estimates that by 2050, one in five persons will be over 65. But living longer does not always mean living healthier, and our increasing lifespan is projected to severely affect our healthcare infrastructure. Dr. Phillip and his team at Johns Hopkins University believe that Bioengineering approaches are key to understanding why we age differently. For his presentation, he spoke on some of the most exciting advances in aging research and how changes in our cells over the years can help determine aging patterns and disease. He also discussed “precision health” and how it can provide unique tools for disease prevention and health promotion so that we can all live well as we age.
Jude M. Phillip is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering, with a secondary appointment in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, and a core member of the Institute for Nanobiotechnology (INBT) at Johns Hopkins University. His lab studies biological aging dynamics in the context of health and disease. He combines fundamental engineering approaches with translational aging and oncology research to develop strategies and technologies to probe aging and identify mechanisms to modify aging trajectories to drive healthy aging.
Phillip has a bachelors of engineering degree in chemical engineering from the City College of New York and a PhD in chemical and biomolecular engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He completed his postdoctoral work at Weil Cornell Medicine with Leandro Cerchietti, MD and Ari Melnick, MD.
Tribute to Laura Smith Spearman and the Smith Family Legacy
The event honored Laura Smith Spearman, a longtime member of the A.G. Rhodes Board of Advisors, and third generation of Smith family volunteers and supporters of A.G. Rhodes. We are grateful to Laura and her family whose generosity will leave a lasting impact on A.G Rhodes for years to come.

About the Event
Each year, the A.G. Rhodes Board of Advisors hosts its signature Living Well Fundraiser to advance information about health care related to older adults and to benefit the well-being of the residents we serve. This event brings together business leaders, partners, and supporters to hear speakers present on important aging-related issues that impact our community. Jocelyn Dorsey, former WSB-TV Broadcast Manager and member of the A.G. Rhodes Board of Trustees, is a returning emcee.
Supporters of the event help us fulfill our mission to serve older adults in our community, particularly those who lack adequate resources for the high-quality care we afford everyone who stays with us. Over the now eight years that we’ve held this annual event, we’ve featured speakers known throughout the nation and raised funds for important initiatives that greatly enhance the quality of life for our residents. Proceeds from the event go towards the A.G. Rhodes Care Partners Scholarship Fund, which provides assistance in further education and training opportunities for our staff.
