Our last (but not least!) National Volunteer Week feature is Dr. Nathan Grigsby, longtime director of Agnes Scottโ€™s Joyful Noise Gospel Choir.

Dr. Grigsbys visit to A.G. Rhodes in 2015 after his mother-in-laws rehab stay recovering from an injury opened the door to a decade of shared joy, music, and ministry. During his visit, he ran into a former music student who was participating in a monthly sing-along. That chance encounter sparked two ideas for how he could bring his love of ministry, music, service, and teaching to A.G. Rhodes.

Dr. Grigsby began bringing the Joyful Noise Gospel Choir, which is comprised of Agnes Scott college students who like to sing gospel music, to perform at A.G. Rhodes twice a year. And, he also started volunteering monthly at A.G. Rhodes playing piano alongside fellow musicians from local churches, offering praise and worship to residents.

Dr. Grigsby says he can see that the choir performances have a profound impact on his students as they witness the impact the concerts have on the elders.

โ€œItโ€™s an honor for them to be able to spread the good news at A.G. Rhodes. To see the residentsโ€™ expressionsโ€”them raising their hands, clapping, and even cryingโ€”itโ€™s a very tangible and meaningful experience.โ€

And during his monthly visits leading praise and worship with other volunteers, Dr. Grigsby said it further exemplifies the importance of serving others, especially seniors. โ€œIโ€™ve had countless encounters with the residents to tell us how much they appreciate us coming out every month,โ€ he said. โ€œIt is a priceless experience. The feeling that you get in serving and ministering to our seniors is like no other.โ€

Thank you, Dr. Grigsby, for your decade of service (and counting)! And Happy National Volunteer Week to all our wonderful volunteers who do so much for our communities. We appreciate you this week and every week!Image attachmentImage attachment

Next up in our National Volunteer Week feature is 16-year-old Oliver Chen! Oliver is a junior at The Westminster Schools and volunteers every Sunday, delivering treats on the mobile ice cream cart in the summer, serving hot chocolate in the winter, leading games like Uno, and participating in various holiday events. Oliver is open to volunteering in any way that will support the elders. He even shares his singing talents through his schoolโ€™s music service club.

โ€œI just love getting to know all the people there, and I feel like Ive made a lot of friends. From the people who work there to the people who live there and their families, itโ€™s good getting to know their stories and what they like, and also, being able to help them out.โ€

Oliver was born in the United States, but until he moved back three years ago, he spent his childhood in China in a multi-generational home where his grandparents also lived; a cultural norm for Chinese families.

โ€œItโ€™s like being around my grandparents again,โ€ Oliver said as he reflected on his close relationship with his grandparents and his time volunteering at A.G. Rhodes.

Oliver says that volunteering at A.G. Rhodes is also therapeutic.

โ€œItโ€™s so much fun to go there every Sunday,โ€ he said. โ€œAs a high schooler, it can get pretty stressful and taking these three or four hours out each week and spending it on something Im passionate about, I just think its good I get to help others while also getting to relax myself.โ€

Thank you, Oliver, for spending time with us!

Happy National Volunteer Week! We are so grateful for our wonderful community of volunteers who do so much to enrich the lives of our elders. This week, we have the pleasure of featuring a volunteer from each community, starting with Russell Wohl, who volunteers during Music Therapy at our Wesley Woods home.

Russell is an Emory University senior studying chemistry and Spanish. He says, โ€œItโ€™s touching whenever residents communicate their gratitude for the music therapy sessions; it makes me realize the impact of what weโ€™re doing and how we are enhancing their experience.โ€

He says his time at A.G. Rhodes has given him a deeper appreciation for elders, and he encourages others to consider volunteering with older adults.

โ€œPeople should consider volunteering with elders because the time spent with them is incredibly fulfilling, both for them and for us. I think it also provides a new perspective on life and the importance of building a strong community.โ€

Thank you, Russell, for sharing your time and your talent with us and our elders!

(Video of Russell playing cello and fellow volunteer, JP York, performing a chamber music concert for elders.)
