Managing Joint Pain in the Winter
The dry and cold winter climate can cause an increase in joint pain and stiffness. Here are some excellent ways to relieve those unwanted aches and pains.
Dress Warmly
Keep your extremities warm by wearing insulated gloves and adding layers. Wear tights or leggings with dresses to keep yourself warm, and limit bare skin exposure to the cold.
Stay Hydrated
Dry and cold climates can still dehydrate you just as quickly as hot climates can. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and drink a large glass before bed to stay hydrated while you sleep. Drink another full glass when you wake up in the morning – it’ll energize you for the day ahead.
Stay Active
Decreased activity leads to increased joint pain and stiffness. Stay active in the winter by working out inside with exercise DVDs or head to your local gym and focus on aerobics. If you decide to exercise outside, make sure to wear layers and limit skin exposure to the elements.
Stay Limber
Flexibility is vital to relieving joint stiffness. Exercises like yoga and Tai Chi are great for flexibility and can be done indoors during the winter. Start with simple poses and slowly progress in difficulty. You can find free yoga classes on YouTube led by experienced yoga instructors.
Use Over-the-Counter Medication Sparingly
Pain relievers like Tylenol or Advil may be useful for relieving pain, but using them too much can lead to health complications that affect your liver and kidneys. Speak to your primary care physician to find the right treatments for you and your condition.
Eat Healthy
A balanced diet of low saturated fat, refined carbs and more fiber can reduce aches and pains. Staying hydrated is also essential. Consume foods like carrots and cucumbers to facilitate digestion.
Increase Vitamin D Intake
Limited sunlight and harsh weather conditions can prevent you from receiving enough vitamin D nutrients from UV rays. Supplement your diet with vitamin D rich foods or supplements like fish oil. Increase your intake of milk and step outside for a few minutes during the warmest part of the day to receive more vitamin D.
